The Tudor Revival Mantel Project

When we were brought into this Tudor Revival remodel, the architect’s design consisted only of a front elevation. From there, Hunter Stone took the lead in developing the details that would bring the vision to life. We created 3D drawings of the mantel and family crest so the architect, contractor, and homeowner could all clearly visualize the final result. Every section, profile, and carved element was carefully detailed before a single piece of stone was cut.
Using laser technology, we were able to match the existing ceiling within 1/32 of an inch—ensuring precision that tape measures and templates could never achieve. The mantel also had two arch openings at different distances on either side, which posed a challenge for symmetry. With exact measurements and adjustments, we made the mantel appear perfectly centered. As many architects say, “The devil is in the details”—and our process makes sure those details don’t get overlooked.
The mantel was built from solid stone blocks, a decision that prevents cracking often seen when stone panels are attached to other materials. To carry the immense weight, a new block base and foundation were installed—designed to ensure long-term strength without relying on mixed-material structural systems that expand and contract at different rates.
From the beginning, collaboration was key. We estimated the mantel’s weight to determine footing requirements, reviewed framing needs, and held meetings with all parties to align every detail. Unlike typical suppliers who simply deliver stone and leave the rest to the contractor, Hunter Stone remained involved—answering framing questions, providing detailed CAD drawings, and helping coordinate installation. The contractor appreciated having a true partner on his side.
The finishing touch was the family crest. Originally drawn as a shallow embossed detail, our stone version was carved several inches deep, giving it remarkable depth and dimension. Even small elements like the crossed swords were carefully shaped, and when the homeowners saw the finished piece, they were astonished by the level of detail and craftsmanship.
This project represents what Hunter Stone is all about: precision, collaboration, and care. We approach each project as if it were for our own home. By combining advanced technology, craftsmanship, and teamwork, we help architects, contractors, and homeowners achieve results that exceed expectations.
